Nowadays, people—especially those living in Beijing—are simply pursuing a healthy lifestyle, getting close to nature, and enjoying sunshine. These simple and straightforward goals have gradually become a reality. All kinds of sunrooms have boomed in recent years: luxury models for an upscale experience, budget-friendly ones for space expansion, high-end designs to elevate taste, and healthy, livable versions for daily living.
The root cause is Beijing’s poor air quality; severe smog has directly undermined people’s quality of life and freedom. Having said that, I’m not here to introduce sunrooms, but to explain how to waterproof a sunroom.
Waterproofing is critical for sunroom durability. If leaks appear shortly after installation, the problem almost always lies in the materials or workmanship provided by the manufacturer. During design and construction, the designer should conduct a detailed analysis based on the client’s requirements. Did you not specify waterproofing, heat insulation, sound insulation, temperature control, and drainage systems when consulting the designer? If not, your sunroom is bound to develop numerous problems down the line.
Today, I’d like to share my practical experience in sunroom waterproofing.

1. Check the Sunroom Frame Structure

A sunroom relies on an integrated, prefabricated frame. First, verify the structural stability of the frame—an unstable frame is a direct cause of leaks. Unlike ordinary doors and windows, sunrooms are mainly glazed with tempered glass, which exerts significant pressure on the frame and demands higher structural standards. If the frame specifications and materials are not properly matched to the glass, future waterproofing repairs will become extremely troublesome.
Recommendation: Communicate clearly with the manufacturer to ensure the frame material and tempered glass are proportionally matched. Never compromise on frame quality to cut costs.

2. Connection Joint Between Sunroom and Building Wall

The junction between the sunroom and the main wall is the most vulnerable spot for leaks. Never cut corners here. If the installation team is on-site, supervise them to thoroughly clean the existing wall—all old paint, sealant, and adhesives must be completely removed to ensure a tight, secure bond.
Recommendation: Take personal responsibility for your sunroom. Since on-site workers may vary in professionalism and attention to detail, stay vigilant and inspect the work closely.

3. Joints Between Doors, Windows, and Frame

Gaps inevitably exist between glass panels and the frame. Therefore, the quality of structural sealant, weatherproof sealant, and silicone sealant used by the manufacturer is non-negotiable. Always choose reputable, high-quality sealants for waterproofing.
Recommendation: As emphasized before, select premium materials and sealants. Do not cut costs with inferior products that lead to shoddy, leak-prone work.

4. Meticulous and Comprehensive Finishing

Finishing usually includes quality inspection. If no formal inspection is provided, conduct your own. Do not overlook any detail in the sealant application between glass, frames, doors, and windows. Check all joints in window and door profiles, as well as seams between frame sections. Every gap and connection point must be fully sealed with silicone. Inspect the work repeatedly to confirm completion before considering the sunroom finished.
